Law #4: Law of Navigation

Valerie Parham-Thompson

Almost anyone can follow a plan (good or bad), but a leader creates the winning plan. This creation is navigation, not simply steering but charting, too.

Vision. Forethought. Planning.

What do navigators need? The ability to learn from mistakes (and experience enough to have had enough mistakes). The willingness to observe and learn from others. The patience to examine the landscape carefully before making a decision. Having enough faith to be optimistic in the journey, but also pragmatic enough to consider all the facts.

Maxwell shared a story of getting support behind a building project at his church. He laid the foundation for support very carefully, involving leaders within the church, getting and giving full details for financing and construction, and learning enough about needs in order to answer questions before they were asked. He was successful at getting support for the project, and continued having support by keeping everyone up to date on progress.
